Dell Vostro 1500 Sigmatel Soundcard and Stereo Mix
I’ve been very happy with my laptop, I even swear that it feels lighter
, but recently I have wanted to record from the current output, e.g wave, stereo mix, or whatever you want to call it. Turns out I don’t have one by default. Dell’s drivers offered for my laptop do not support this “stereo mix” option, or so I thought.
First check if you have the stereo mix interface, right click on the volume icon in the tray, then click recording devices, then right click in the main box and tick both “Show Disabled Devices” and “Show Disconnected Devices”, if you are using the normal Dell drivers (dated September 2007 I think) for Vista, then you will need to do the following anyway (always good to check first though). Sigmatel do not offer drivers for their devices so you need to get them from Dell. Further digging around on Google searches led me to find that Dell have just released a Sigmatel driver (December 2007) for their laptops. Driver support page and direct link. Problem (for me with Vista) is that it’s XP only, not helpful, but the good news is that you just run the driver setup in “Windows XP sp2 compatibility mode”. This is done by right clicking on the setup file and going to properties, then the compatibility tab, tick the box to run in a compatibility mode. This works brilliantly, I now have the stereo mix option. Now, because of the way Vista is, you can only have one recording interface set to default, and you need it set to default in order to work.
The drivers for notebooks tend to be heavily modded by the laptop manufacturers, some remove all but the basic features, while others provide only a few. There are some hacked drivers available, but try official drivers first.
A little development, more a rant, but worth checking if you read this page.
There is now a forum thread to ask for help with your issues.

did not work for me. but is this for vista only cuz I was looking for something for windows.
Aaron can you elaborate please? I did this on windows vista, hence why the XP drivers did not install without the compatibility settings.
Hi, I just wanted to leave a comment here so that anyone else in my situation might find this information.
I have a Dell Vostro 1000 (2xTurion 64) running Vista, and I was trying to enable “stereo mix” so that I could record stuff with audacity.
I have spent the last couple of days trying various drivers and solutions including registry fixes.
The only solution I have found, from loads of very helpful websites including this one (thanks CTN) is this one.
Install the R171789 driver in XP-compatibility mode. (I don’t think you need to reboot here).
In Recording Devices, set Stereo Mix to be default and enable it.
Audacity now has the option to record stereo mix.
But there’s a problem – the sound has become crackly with lots of blips. The solution I found to this was to upgrade the ATI graphics driver. There’s a link somewhere online if you search for “R171789 Catalyst” or similar – the upgrade I found was AMD/ATi Catalyst?
Anyway, after reboot this had solved the crackle problem and I’m happy.
The only other problem I had was the first time I installed R171789, I then went and messed around with the Registry. So after I rebooted, Windows decided it didn’t like the driver (some kind of driver protection/checking seems to be at work in Vista) and it disabled my sound completely.
After reinstalling the R171789, and not touching the Registry, I have had no such problems again. So… leave the Registry alone with this driver!
Good luck.
Thank you so much! I have been working on this for several hours and was stumped on why I had no stereo mix button. I tried a few different driver downloads but they were not successfull. This download worked like a charm! Although, I am kicking myself for just not going to Dell’s website to begin with.
Thanks Again!
How come it is not working in mine? I have inspiron 1720. please help.
Maybe it’s a different soundcard Angel?
Is it a Sigmatel STAC9200?
Got another issue buddies. How can I select both Stereo mix and Mic at the same time? Cause it is appeared to have only one choice so we can merely record either background music or our voice. Any suggestion please!
my laptop is dell vostro 1500 with soundcard sigmetel high definition audio codec, and I can not use sterio mix function,
Any suggestion for me please?
@Algobie: Vista only allows one to be selected, I don’t think there is a way around it. Could be wrong though.
@Le: Install the XP driver given in the article (following the compatibility thing) and it should work.
I don’t know how this driver reacts with Vista SP1 (if installed) or if there is a better more recent XP driver, I might look if I get time though.
@Jon: I use XP SP3 on my vostro 1500. This driver gives us Stereo Mix function but still I can not find the way to select both. Thanks!
@Algobie: If I remember, there is the same limit imposed on most Window’s systems, you can only tick one input source. There might be other software out there that can alter that. Your best bet however is to record one source, then record the other. Most recording software can only take one input at a time anyway.
OMG I can’t believe.. IT WORKED !!!!!! THANK YOU !!!!
Can anyone help me out? i am having a dell vostro 1500 laptop. Earlier i was having both vista (factory installed) and xp sp2 (installed myself).Sound worked fine in both. But now i completely formatted and have xp professional sp 2 in my laptop.I installed the audio driver R158235 (found in driver CD).On installing its showing no error but when restarted its giving “Error=This system doesnot support the driver you are attempting to install”. The same happens when i download R R171789 driver and install. Can anyone say how i will be able to get the audio back ? Plz help!!
